Jeneanne > It was while we were "trapped" in the cave at Carlsbad (due to 2 elevators being out of order) that we were talking to this French guy who teaches Spanish in Corpus Christi, TX and his friend who lives in NM. They were telling us about this place near Deming NM where you could go pick up rocks containing semi-precious jewels. We thought that sounded like fun so we changed our route to California to make a stop at Rockhound Park.

Jeneanne > Now I had invisioned small rocks sparkling with jewels that you could just pick up and put in your pocket. Most of the rocks we found were the size of these rocks used to spell out ROCKHOUND, and you really don't know what you've got if you don't have the tools to cut the rocks open with. But it was still a lot of fun.
Jeneanne > There was a 15 pound limit (on how many rocks you could take out of there) , but this one would have been to big to fit in the car anyway.

Jeneanne > The trail is a lot steeper than it looks in this picture. We probably would have found more good rocks if we had left the beaten path, but it was 108 degrees . If you go to Rockhound Park , July is probably not the best time to go, and be sure to bring a backpack or something to put your rocks in, some bottled water and wear a hat.

Jeneanne > Despite the fact that we were totally unequiped to go rock hunting, this little unplanned expedition was a lot of fun. Josie brought back 3 rocks, and I brought back one (from the park which I'm now using as a doorstop, and this one that I purchased at a rock shop.
